Finn Harps Women’s U17 and U19 Teams gearing up for their second season in the Women’s National League

Finn Harps Head of Women’s Development, Paddy McDaid, is delighted to see Finn Harps return to Nation League action this weekend as the U17s play Dundalk on Saturday at home and the U19s travel to Peamount United on Sunday.  Paddy, who is manager of the U19s as well, is looking forward to Phase 1 in the league for both teams as they have been drawn in groups with teams of a very high quality.  This is brilliant for the development of women’s football in the North West and the challenge that these games present will only further enhance the development of the players individually and collectively.

Another bonus is the return of assistant coach Dessie McGlinchey at U19 Level.  The U17s also welcome back manager Patrick McGrenaghan and his assistant Thomas Hughes.  This continuity is vital according to McDaid and he acknowledges the time these coaches have dedicated to Finn Harps Women’s football and not to mention the traveling these coaches do every week to make sure the players get every opportunity available. The majority of players put in a lot of effort to get to training and matches and some drive themselves with others supported by family members.

According to McDaid the players and their development both on and off the field is what it is all about.  “We are fortunate to have a lot of players returning this year.  Unfortunately some were unable to return due to other commitments or opportunities but that has presented opportunities to other players in the North West.  The recruitment process has gone very well this year and both teams can’t wait to get their league campaigns started this weekend.  Preseason has gone well over the last 6 weeks and that included four Sunday morning sessions in Grafter’s Gym in Letterkenny where Ben Boyle put the girls through a fantastic programme.”

There is also a huge financial cost to developing these teams and we cannot thank last year’s sponsors enough for their generosity.  Axis Construction (Aidan Gallagher) and MIP (John and Tina Maloney) were the main sponsors.  Arena 7 (Enda Nicholls), MOWI (Maurice Kelly) and McElhinneys Stores (Sandra Devenney) were also key sponsors.  The players also had individual sponsors.  A huge thank you to all sponsors.  Anyone interested in sponsoring our women’s teams or players can contact us at [email protected].
