The U17s began the season with an excellent 3-2 victory over hosts Derry City in the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium.
Harps started the strongest in the opening spells of the game before the home side started to grow into the game and gained more possession. With more possession it was Derry who broke the deadlock as a corner was cleared by Harps but not far enough as the second ball was knocked past Sheridan in the Harps goal. Derry continued to press and doubled their lead to go 2-0 at half time.
The second half saw Harps put the pressure back on the home team with a renewed vigour. Substitute Matthew McGeehan was causing problems up top as he came on and it paid off when he won a corner that Josh Cullen was able to tap in from the back post to reduce the deficit.
Shortly after, with the energy levels lifting, it was Harps who caught Derry on the counter and Conor Gibson was able to slide the ball past the Derry keeper to equalise.
As the game got more tense Harps fitness levels started to show and they were hungry for more. Although Derry had their chances, so did the Harps and came close a few times before game changer McGeehan grabbed the ball in the box and put Harps 3-2 which was the final score.
A fantastic performance from the boys in their first game of the season with Rowan McGroarty and Matthew McGeehan picking up a joint man of the match performance.
Thanks to Shearnan McCay for the report.
