WU17

Finn Harps WU17s picked up their second win on the bounce with an entertaining game at Finn Park in front of a good crowd. Harps started well with Sophie Canning and Caitlin Doherty impressing as Harps got a foothold on the game. Midway through the half, Canning received the ball from wide on the left and switched play all the way out to Sophie McLaughlin on the right who drove inside and shot powerfully across goal. The effort was well saved by the feet of Nugent in the away goal. Longford themselves had a period of pressure however Fia Coyle and Scarlett Keys dealt well with their attacks.

The second half was action packed. First, Doherty was fouled as she was entering the box. It was Sienna Bradley over the close range free kick. Her effort had the keeper beaten and crashed off the bar. Moments later, Longford had a through ball half cleared which fell to McCabe who shot first time and chipped the home keeper to put Longford ahead on the 47th minute.

Harps to their credit reacted well and won the midfield battle from here on, with Eabha Daly and Chloe Deeney creating opportunities for the home team.

Harps equalised when Doherty found the top corner in a super team goal on the 70th minute. Sorcha Keys found Deeney, who combined with Sophie McLaughlin to release Doherty who finished expertly past Nugent to the top corner.

As the game came to a close, Harps looked most likely to score and got the reward their pressure deserved as Bradley’s in-swinging corner found the net, creeping in at the front post through a crowd for the Harps winner. Next up is an away tie with Sligo.

POTM went to Sophie Canning, Fia Coyle and Sophie McLaughlin and they are pictured with the goalscorers Doherty and Bradley.

WU19

Harps WU19’s made the journey to Oriel Park on Sunday and despite a very good team performance they returned home with a defeat.

The girls dominated long periods of the first half and played some great football.  They went close on a few occasions with Orlaith Doherty, Heidi Gill, Maryanne Ward and Eva Blaney all having shot from distance.  Aislinn Coll had 2 free kicks that were dealt with well by the Dundalk goalkeeper.  Niamh Ryan, Codie Walsh and Eva Blaney were combining well.

Dundalk’s main threat was on the counter attack with Chloe Ibezm a threat.  Harps had a good attack up the right with Maryanne Ward and her square ball fell to Aislinn Coll at the edge of the box but the attacking midfielder took a touch and was closed down quickly.

Harps WU19 v Dundalk

Dundalk came more into the game in the second half and did catch Harps with a counter attack in the 50th minute but Claire Diver made a great safe from Ibezim. However, in the 56th minute the powerful 20 year old made no mistake when she broke free from Erika Gallagher and Darcey Kelly, despite Harps claims for offside, and she rounded Claire Diver to give Dundalk the lead.

Harps had two golden opportunities to equalise when Maryanne Ward produced two brilliant runs from full back but unfortunately striker Orlaith Doherty put both efforts over the bar.  Doherty was a constant threat but it wasn’t to be her or Harps’ day. In the 66th minute Ibezim shook off both centre halves before seeing her shot saved by Diver but she was alert to the rebound and finished neatly.

Harps introduced Emily Irwin, Freya Canning, Bridin Hynes, Roisin Lynch and Caitlin Doherty and they gave Harps new energy and despite Ella McHugh and Heidi’s Gill’s efforts and a strong penalty shout, when Maryanne Ward was up ended in the box, Dundalk held on for all 3 points.

The POTM was shared between Codie Walsh, Heidi Gill and Maryanne Ward.  Up next is Peamount FC at Finn Park at 3pm on the 22nd September.
