Our WU17s hosted Galway in Corry Park on Saturday. With Galway shading the possession from the start McGough hit the post early after a good team move. McGough opened the scoring herself after rounding the Harps keeper on 5 minutes after a fine through ball split the Harps defense. Harps responded with Caitlin Doherty beating the Galway defense and stinging the palms of the Galway keeper. Shortly before half time Galway doubled their lead after Harps failed to clear with the Galway winger Barrett firing high to the roof of the net from 20 yards.
The opening stages of the 2nd half was an even contest with Chloe Deeney and Sarah McGuinness key in Harps bid for a comeback. Harps had some spells of possession in the 2nd half however could not create anything clear cut against a strong Galway side who also feature in the Cup Quarter Finals next week. The clinical Galway side finished the tie strongly adding two more with shots from range to win the game and will expect to go deep into this competition. Sarah McGuinness picked up the POTM award. Next up for this team is an away game versus Shamrock Rovers in the LOI Academy Cup quarter final.

WU19
The Finn Harps WU19 team made the long journey to Galway on Sunday and were defeated in a closely contested match. The away team started the game brightly against a strong breeze and were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty early in the match when the Galway defender appeared to have handled the ball in her own box. Soon after Galway took the lead when McGough finished neatly despite Harps claiming a foul to their defender in the build up to the goal. Nevertheless, the Harps girls played some great football in the first half against the elements.
Maryanne Ward made a driving run up the right wing after a good ball from Bridin Hynes and the Galway keeper saved well at the near post. Young Gweedore girl Ward had another excellent display from right back as the opposition found it difficult to contain her with many a run leading to a free kick. Codie Walsh and Heidi Gill were performing well in midfield with Niamh Ryan and Olivia Maxwell combining to great effect up the left side of the Harps attack. Harps keeper Claire Diver and centre backs Darcey Kelly and Erika Gallagher dealt well with a strong breeze that made it difficult. Joyce extended the Galway lead just before halftime with a fine volley.
Although the elements died a little in the second half Harps dominated possession and the lively Orlaith Doherty was a constant threat with Aislinn Coll and Caitlin Doherty providing great service. Doherty and Maxwell went close with shots from distance. The away team had numerous free kicks from distance but Galway keeper Hernon demonstrated great ball handling skills in difficult conditions. Emily Irwin and Freya Canning brought fresh legs to the match as Harps continued to dominate possession. The game ended 2 nil to the home team despite Harps putting in a fine team performance. Up next is a derby game in Finn Park on Sunday, 1st September 2024 at 3pm against Sligo Rovers.
