Finn Harps prevailed in a closely contested derby game against Sligo Rovers on Saturday.

Rovers opened the scoring when Murphy received the ball in some space after good work from Burke down the wing. Murphy’s shot from 25 yards went straight to the top corner in what is a contender for goal of the season. Harps later had chances of their own with Caitlin Doherty and Sophie McLaughlin finding themselves in good positions but were denied by Sligo. McLaughlin’s effort was cleared off the line by a recovering defender after the keeper was beaten. After some sustained pressure in the Harps half, Sligo won a penalty and had a chance of doubling the lead. Unfortunately for Sligo the penalty was missed and this gave Harps hope.

Brennan and Burke were instrumental in Sligo first half attacks but found the Keys sister’s and Sophie Doherty in fine form in the second half. Early in the second half Sienna Bradley sent a corner in on top of the Rovers keeper and Scarlett Keys got there ahead of the keeper to equalise. Harps edged the second half with the midfield trio of Niamh Ryan, Sophie Canning and Alannah Curran on top in their battles. Ryan was sent through on the 80th minute and got to the ball first ahead of the onrushing keeper. Doherty then had the simple job of tapping into an empty net to give Harps victory in what was a great advertisement for Women’s football in the Northwest.

Alannah Curran and Sophie Canning shared the POTM.
