This game kicked into life on the 25 minute mark when Mayo took the lead against the run of play. Brennan’s volley from the edge of the box gave the visitors the lead, but Harps then pressed on in search of a quick equaliser. Their pressure paid off as Sienna Bradley’s in-swinging corner went straight in to the net on the 30th minute. A deserved equaliser.
The 2nd half began as a midfield battle with the physical Mayo team shading the exchanges in the early parts of the 2nd half. A miss hit clearance from the Harps defence fell to a Mayo attacker and they took the lead again on 61st minute. Jennings done well to take the ball down when Harps failed to clear the ball. She fired past the home keeper to the roof of the net from 20 yards. Mayo had further spells of pressure including several corners and shots on goal, however Harps remained in the game with the impressive Alannah Curran, Sophie Doherty and Rhianna Doherty rallying.
These defensive efforts gave Harps belief and they grew into the game with Chloe Deeney and Sarah McGuinness threatening. Harps got the equaliser their play deserved on the 75th minute. A cross struck the arm of a Mayo defender and a penalty was awarded. Deeney stepped up and slotted the penalty home.
Harps then hit the bar twice in the closing stages of the game as they searched for the winning goal. First, Sophie Dohertys cross/shot from the left hit the underside of the bar in the 80th minute after a flowing team move, before the same player was unlucky to see another effort hit the bar moments later. Emma Wallace and Sophie Canning won possession and released Chloe Deeney. She switched play to Sarah McGuinness. Deeney and McGuinness played another one-two before crossing from the byline in a super move. Doherty was unfortunate with her effort as it crashed off the bar and the game finished as a draw.
This now concludes the WU17 team’s season who have seen massive growth and development over their 2nd season in the league.
