WU17

Finn Harps hosted Drogheda in the WU17 in the excellent Glenview Park Gleneely this past Saturday. It was a fantastic day for girls football as Gleneely u10 mascots accompanied the teams to the field before the hosts, Carndonagh and Sea Rovers played at half time.

The WU17 game was a classic battle. Harps stormed into a two nil lead with Sarah McGuinness the architect for both Caitlin Doherty goals. Doherty exploited the high Drogheda line and raced onto McGuinness’ lofted pass and she finished expertly on both occasions. McGuinness then won a penalty on the stroke of half time as she was fouled after Sophie Doherty sent her through. A goal at this stage would kill the tie however the Drogheda keeper made a good save to keep it two nil.

Drogheda battled back into the contest scoring two in quick succession after mistakes in the Harps defence to the tie the game with 10 minutes to go. In what was a fantastic showcase for girls football for the large crowd in attendance it was Drogheda who stole the show with O’Donoghue scoring a screamer to the top corner from 25 yards to win the match. She received the ball wide on the left and drove inside before striking to the far top corner.

Harps had the last chance of the game as they searched for an equaliser. Sophie McLaughlin was played in but was unlucky to be denied by the body of the away goalkeeper outside the box. McLaughlin got to the ball first ahead of the defender and keeper. As she attempted to round the keeper, the keeper’s body blocked her advance and calls for a hand ball were waved away.

Harps WU19s v DLR

WU19

DLR Waves WU19 1-0 Finn Harps WU19

Credit to both teams for serving up a great contest in Dublin on Sunday despite the terrible weather conditions.

Although the home team had the elements in the first half it was the away team who created numerous chances and threatened on many occassions but like recent matches they could not capitalise on their good play. DLR Waves were a threat on set pieces but Harps defended well against a strong breeze with defenders Erika Gallagher, Freya Canning and Darcey Kelly doing well.

Maryanne Ward made a typical run up the wing and to the byline and her cross could not be turned home at the back post by Ella McHugh as the home defended well. Heidi Gill had a snapshot then but just failed to find the target.

Aislinn Coll and Orlaith Doherty almost breached the home defense on a couple of occasions but couldn’t get the end product. Harps received a sucker punch just before halftime when rhey conceided possession in their own half and the home team combined well to take the lead.

Harps pushed hard for an equaliser in the 2nd half. Eva Blaney almost concerted at the back post and Codie Walsh delivered a great ball into Orlaith Doherty but her header from close range went over the bar. Soon after DLR Waves almost doubled their lead but Claire Diver was quick off her line to make a fine save.

The introduction of Niamh Ryan, Bridin Hynes and Olivia Maxwell brought a freshness to the team but Harps couldn’t find an equaliser. Again, credit to both teams for producing an entertaining game in terrible conditions. Special mention for the officials too as they did a great job on a difficult day.
